Mirrors Matter: Bolstering Writing Workshop with Culturally Relevant Mentor Texts
Featured Speaker: Jane Fleming
The #WeNeedDiverseBooks movement has inspired widespread awareness about the need for “mirrors” and “windows” in our nation’s classrooms – mirror books that reflect children’s lives and experiences, and window books that offer views of the broader world. “Mirrors” especially help children feel included and connected in their classrooms. Research shows that such culturally relevant texts significantly impact reading and writing development.
Jane Fleming is a reading specialist with more than 20 years’ experience working in urban public schools in Chicago, St. Louis, and Washington, DC. She is co-founder of KIDS LIKE US, a non-profit organization dedicated to children’s literacy learning in urban schools. KIDS LIKE US advocates for culturally relevant instruction and access to books in which children can see themselves, their families, and their communities represented and valued.
